Indonesia’s Big Move: New Capital, New Trade Opportunities

      · Trade News

      Breaking News:

On November 19, Indonesia’s parliament approved a bill to officially move the capital from Jakarta to Nusantara in East Kalimantan, transforming Jakarta into a special administrative region.

This monumental decision is part of Indonesia's long-term vision for sustainable development and balanced growth.

The new capital, Nusantara—which means "archipelago" in Indonesian—symbolizes national unity. Plans for this move have been in motion for decades, with formal steps beginning in recent years. Starting in 2024, the relocation process will happen in stages.

Why Is Indonesia Moving Its Capital?

      • Environmental Challenges: Jakarta is sinking, with over 40% of the city now below sea level due to uncontrolled groundwater use and rising sea levels. It also faces severe congestion, pollution, and frequent flooding.

In 2021, people had to wade through floodwaters in Jakarta during high tides.

      • Overpopulation and Economic Strain: Java, where Jakarta is located, holds more than half of Indonesia’s population but makes up only 6.6% of its land area. This imbalance has led to overcrowding and unsustainable urban development in Jakarta.
      • Economic Balance: While Java generates 57% of Indonesia's GDP, regions like Kalimantan, which cover over 60% of the country’s land, contribute only 17%. The new capital aims to spread economic growth more evenly.
      • A Vision for the Future: The move aligns with Indonesia’s 2045 Golden Vision, a plan for economic transformation, disaster resilience, and sustainable growth.

      What This Means for Trade?

The capital relocation will increase demand for specific goods, creating export opportunities for businesses worldwide:

      • Infrastructure and Construction Materials: Massive construction projects for the new capital will require building materials, heavy machinery, and engineering vehicles.
      • Energy and Smart Technology Solutions: As a “smart city,” Nusantara will depend on advanced grid systems and sustainable technology, driving demand for renewable energy solutions like solar panels and wind turbines.
      • Green Energy Equipment: The city’s ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2045 will open opportunities for exporting eco-friendly technology and waste management systems.
